Who we help

image

Our objective is to help increase the income of extremely poor families in Pakistan on a sustainable basis. We are doing this by providing these families milking cows and goats. The family raises the cow and the cow raises the family:

  • Family receives the cow as qardh-e-hasanah (interest free loan) as well as free training & support in raising the animal and running their small business
  • Family produces milk, yoghurt, butter and butter milk, etc
  • And uses it for themselves and sells additional in the market
  • In 2 years or less, family is able to pay the qardh back (and we re-invest this amount to support another family!)
  • The cow and its calves are for the family to keep - their herd and their income grow!
  • As their herd/income grow, we expect to see additional benefits in terms of health and education of kids
  • In few years InShaAllah, we have helped change the life of this family

How we operate

Our vision is to help poorest families in Pakistan come out of poverty through investing on selfsustaining local projects. Under our model, there is no burden on poor as they do not pay any interest or management fee. We work closely with the Committee of Elders of the villages where we operate. In addition, we provide technical training and veterinary services to help the family manage the animal (asset) through its lifecycle.

Key steps in our process

  • Announce the project, along with the selection criteria, in the village
  • Receive applications from deserving families
  • Select the families as per the established criteria
  • Help the family identify and select the animal
  • Get approval from the veterinary
  • Sign the agreement, complete procurement and deliver animal to the family
  • Train the family in raising the animal and in managing and selling the produce
  • Our Field Coordinator, who is our full-time employee from the same village, visits each family every month to review the progress of animal and to receive the monthly instalments. The Field Coordinator also arranges any necessary vaccination
  • We meet the Committee of Elders on a regular basis to keep them abreast on the progress
  • We issue regular reports to keep the donors up to date on the progress

The result is happier families that are financially in a much better position

Other Issues We Support

Food Packages

During Ramadan, HCAL provides food packages to extremely poor. An average package has enough supplies to support Suhar and Futoor for a family of eight throughout the month.

Water Wells

HCAL has also dug water wells to support communities. With wells dug in their own neighborhood, women and kids do not need to walk for miles to fetch water.

Wheel Chairs

We also provide wheelchairs to the disabled that are unable to buy one on their own. A small support, in the form of one wheelchair, goes a long way in terms of impact it creates in peoples’ lives.
